Makena Cove

Makena Cove, also known by some as Secret Beach, is one of the most breathtaking locations to pop the question.  The golden sand shimmers in stark contrast to the jet black lava rocks that surround the cove.  The morning sun shining on the ocean creates the most spectacular aqua water, which never hurts the romantic backdrop.  And the sunsets are all-time, splashing a rainbow of vibrant colors as the sun sinks dreamily down.

*Tips:  The cove is usually better in the morning, and the winds are almost always minimal.  in the afternoons and evenings, the winds can pick up..  Also, make sure you have a fairly clear idea how to get to the cove, as its entrance is rather hidden in a rock wall.

Haleakala

At the top of this magnificent 10,023 foot crater is one of the most dazzling views of Maui.  The crater itself has a moon like landscape, which adds to the otherworldly experience.  Whether you decide to pop the question as the sun rises or sets, there is no doubt that this proposal will be talked about for years to come!

*Tips:  If you decide to go for the sunrise proposal, be well prepared!  Depending on where you're staying on Maui, you'll have an early morning drive ahead of you if you want to get to the top by sunset.  Also, the temperature is pretty cold (sometimes below zero!), the drive is pretty windy and you will definitely have an audience for the proposal.  If you bring coffee, blankets, don't mind the crowd and your partner doesn't get car sick, this spot is perfect for your proposal!  If this doesn't sound like your cup of tea, then the sunset slot would probably work better, as the drive is easier after having been awake for a while and there are fewer people around.

Poli Poli Sunset

Nature lovers unite at Poli Poli, where the sunset is exceptionally gorgeous and the crowds are minimal.  The Poli Poli forest sustained a pretty big fire in 2006, but the regrowth actually gives you a better view of the setting sun!  If you get there a little before sunset, the clouds will put on a show for you.  From the misty cloud tendrils that weave around the pines to the burst of vibrant blue sky when the puffy white clouds part, this location is perfect for tree huggers!

*Tips:  This location is 6,800 feet above sea level and is usually quite chilly (or downright cold at times).  And the rain can come in surprise spurts, even when its crystal clear in the valley below.  Thankfully, these showers usually add a few stunning rainbows to the mix, so no one seems to complain!  If you want to grab some picnic treats, stop off at the Kula Marketplace for some culinary delights.

Maui Chef's Table

For many people, amazing food is a direct line to their heart.  And if your partner is a foodie, there is only one place to pop the question.  Maui Chef's Table is an award-winning experience, from the daily changing 7-course dinner to the entertaining  in-person preparation.  Their outdoor dining courtyard is nestled amongst the trees, with peek-a-boo views of the West Maui Mountains, the sparkling lagoon and the lush tropical vegetation that surrounds the Maui Tropical Plantation.  And that's just the location!  The executive chef of The Mill House Restaurant will explain and prepare each meal in front of this intimate group of diners, each dish brimming with dynamic flavor and fresh ingredients.  With an in-house charcuterie, a "fresh ingredient only" bar and a homemade sourdough that will make you weep with joy, your partner will be in culinary heaven.  Word to the wise, make sure to pop the question in between courses, as this food tends to take attention away from everything else.

*Tips:  Make a reservation early, as this hot spot always ends up selling out.  You can even talk to the staff about arranging something to come out with a course, or with one of their beautiful cocktails.  Their staff is ever accommodating and will make sure this is a night that you both will never forget.  The evenings can get a little chilly in the winter months, so make sure to bring something warm.

Shadowfax Sunset Cruise

One of the most romantic places on Maui isn't actually on the island at all. Sailing the turquoise waters in a sleek yacht with the one you love as the sun starts to set will set you up for the perfect proposal.  While Captain Mike expertly sails wherever you choose, make sure to keep a look out for the whales, dolphins and turtles that frequently show off.  You can even have a meal prepared for you in their galley.  And you won't have to worry about crowds or finding the right spot to propose, because the boat is all yours.

*Tips:  The wind in the winter months tend to pick up, so you might want to check ahead of time with the captain to chart the best course possible.  And make sure that your partner doesn't get sea sick, as no one wants to pop the question to a partner that has their head hanging overboard!

Kapalua Bay

This exquisite beach is straight out of a Hollywood movie.  Known as one of the finest beaches on Maui, there is no shortage of places to propose.  And because of the lava outcroppings, this beach is pretty well protected from the Maui winds.  From the golden sand to the palm tree-lined outskirts, Kapalua Bay was made for proposals!

*Tips:  Make a day of it and bring your swimsuits, snorkel gear and a picnic.  There is also a beach activities desk, which offers a variety of ocean recreation equipment.  This beach is a great place to spend the whole day, and you can pick the perfect moment to pop the question!

Hana

Hana has thousands of spots along the way that would make for a lovely proposal.  But the black sand beach at Waianapanapa is one of the most striking spots to pop the question.  The vivid colors make this remarkable location picture perfect, from the aqua waves that roll onto the black sand beaches to the bright green palm trees swaying in the tropical breeze.  There are a few well-marked trails if you feel like exploring a bit.  No matter where you end up, it'll be a beautiful place to propose!

*Tips:  Be prepared to propose in front of quite a few people.  This gorgeous spot hasn't been kept a secret and the visitors come in droves.  Also, this isn't an easy swimming hole, so you might want to pack a picnic and some hiking shoes instead of your swimsuit.

La Perouse Bay

This bay is definitely more of a sturdy shoe location because of the charcoal black lava and white coral that make up the shoreline.  The King's Trail begins at the parking lot and winds around a few secluded coves have a plethora of tropical fish, which make for great snorkeling.  And you'll get to see the historical remains of the Hawaiian settlements, carefully protected by lava walls.  A little history and a lot of beauty makes this location practically perfect!

*Tips:  Again, do not attempt this hike with anything less than sturdy shoes!  The razor-sharp rocks can quickly turn any romantic moment into a bloody mess.  The park closes around sunset, which is good since its rumored that restless Hawaiian spirits come out looking for trouble.  And the gods will curse you with bad luck if you take any rocks from the park, so make sure the only rock you're taking home is the one on the ring!

Maui Tropical Plantation

The hardest part about this location is picking from the many impeccable proposal sites.  From the perfectly staged garden gazebo to the tropical gardens with Waikapu Valley in the background.  Maui Tropical Plantation can end up being more than just a proposal location.  You can go ziplining or on a tram ride to tour the property and learn about the history.  You can shop in the local shops, looking for the perfectly handmade soap or tropical painting to bring home.  And when the time is right, you can pop the question.  To celebrate, you can head over to the Mill House Restaurant bar, which is a photo opportunity in itself.  There, you can cheers to the beginning of the rest of your life!

*Tips:  Make sure to give yourself enough time to explore the property.  You can even arrange something with the staff at the Maui Tropical Plantation if you want to make your proposal extra special!

End of Pipiwai Trail

This park welcomes more than one million visitors each year, and for good reason.  This manageable 1.8 mile trail winds around many spectacular waterfalls and streams, with the lush Hana greenery rainforest framing the hike.  Just as you get used to it, the foliage changes drastically and you'll find yourself in the midst of a dense bamboo forest with the sound of the crashing waterfalls in the background.  Stunning from beginning to end, this hike it the perfect build up for the end of the trail.  Waimoku Falls is at the end of the Pipiwai Trail, and it is truly magnificent.  This 400 foot waterfall courses through the trees and the bottom of the waterfall makes for a once-in-a-lifetime proposal!

*Tips:  The trickiest part of the hike is right before the waterfall.  You'll need to cross a stream, and will most likely need to get your shoes wet in the process.  Make sure to go slow and steady, as no one wants to take a nasty fall on the slippery rocks.  Also, this is not a swimming location.  You don't even want to stand under the waterfall, as debris does come down with the water.  And don't expect to be alone by any means! This very popular location come with the price of many visitors, so be prepared to make your proposal a spectator sport!
